TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The consumer price index (CPI) continued to climb in June to reach 2.42%, the government said Friday (July 5).
The latest increase followed inflation levels of 1.95% in April and 2.24% in May. A major contributing factor was the rising cost of eating out, posting an increase of 2.78% from June 2023, per CNA.
However, basic consumption articles became cheaper, with the price of eggs falling 18.17% from the same month last year, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS). Fresh milk and toilet paper also saw their prices decline.
The core CPI, which does not include the cost of energy, fruit, and vegetables, stood at 1.83% in June, the same level as in May.
