TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) Monday (July 8) issued heavy rain advisories for 18 cities and counties.
At 4:30 p.m., the CWA issued an extremely heavy rain advisory for Taipei, Tainan, and Nantou County that will be in effect through the evening. An extremely heavy is issued when the 24-hour accumulated rainfall exceeds 200 mm or surpasses 100 mm in three hours.
The CWA sent a text message at 4:02 p.m. warning of heavy rain and flash floods in Taipei's mountainous areas. It sent a thunderstorm warning message at 4:30 p.m. and said there could be heavy rain in the city until 5 p.m.
The CWA also announced a heavy rain advisory for the north coast of Keelung, New Taipei, mountainous areas of Taoyuan, mountainous areas of Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi, Chiayi County, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, the Hengchun Peninsula, mountainous areas of Yilan County, mountainous areas of Hualien County, and mountainous areas of Taitung County. A heavy rain alert is issued when 24-hour accumulated rainfall exceeds 80 mm or exceeds 40 mm in an hour.
The CWA's afternoon flood warning covers the Shuangxi River in Taipei, Caoshan River in Chiayi County, Dabao River in New Taipei, Nanshi River in New Taipei, Shiding Creek in New Taipei, Xiayun Creek in Taoyuan, and Shamo Creek in Pingtung County.
Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious of rising river levels. They are recommended to avoid river areas and refrain from water-related activities.
