TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Seattle Mariners signed Taiwanese pitcher Shen Chia-shi (沈家羲) to the team on Wednesday (July 10).
Mariners Player Development in an X post welcomed him to the Mariners family. He is the 12th Taiwanese signed by the Mariners after Chen Wei-yin (陳偉殷) in 2020, per CNA.
Known as the "Fireballer,” the 20-year-old pitcher stands 186 cm tall and studies at Taoyuan’s Kainan University.
Domestic and international teams have been following Shen since his high school days. His fastball exceeded 150 km/h in high school and several foreign teams continued to monitor him as he progressed to university.
Last year, it was reported that Shen was set to sign with the Oakland Athletics for around US$350,000 (NT$11.4 million), but the deal fell through for unspecified reasons, per Liberty Times. The Mariners offered him a contract worth US$250,000.
