TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s population fell to 23,412,899 by the end of June, registering the sixth consecutive month of decline, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) said Wednesday (July 10).
The June total was 709 lower than the one for May, while 10,440 children were born, 728 fewer than the previous month, per CNA. Even though the total population declined during the first half of 2024, it showed an increase of 39,616 over June 2023.
If not taking immigration into account, the population shrank by 4,482 in June, as the 10,440 births were offset by 14,922 deaths, according to the MOI data. The month saw 79,450 people move into Taiwan, 14,193 fewer than in May. The number of residents leaving totaled 75,677, or 14,210 fewer than the previous month.
The MOI also counted 9,275 weddings in June, including 237 same-sex weddings. In contrast, 4,120 couples divorced, including 75 same-sex couples.
