TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆) accidentally hit two pedestrians with his car on Tuesday (July 9), resulting in hospitalizations for both.
According to the police, at 9 p.m. while driving his SUV on Ruian Street in Da’an District, Lai failed to yield to pedestrians while making a left turn, per CNA. The police conducted a sobriety test and determined that Lai was not driving under the influence, but investigations are still underway.
Lai apologized on Facebook on Wednesday (July 10), explaining he failed to see the pedestrians due to poor visibility and a blind spot from his car’s A-pillar. He said he accompanied the injured pedestrians to the hospital for examination and treatment.
During a media interview at the Legislative Yuan on Wednesday, Lai apologized twice and reiterated that he would take full responsibility, per UDN. The legislator also promised to pay for the hospital fees.
When asked by the media about criticisms from netizens calling Taiwan a “pedestrian hell,” Lai acknowledged the criticism and promised to be more careful.
According to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, drivers who fail to stop and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks or other legal pedestrian crossings will be fined between NT$1,200 (US$36) and NT$6,000.
