TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s CPC Corporation announced energy deals with companies in Qatar and Australia this week as the country moves towards a green energy transition and carbon-neutral future.
On Monday (July 8), it was reported that CPC Corporation signed a 27-year agreement in Doha with Qatar Energy, which gives CPC Corporation a 5% stake in the latter’s North Field East LNG project that broke ground in 2023. Per the agreement, Taiwan anticipates receiving 4 million tons of LNG annually from the deal.
On Thursday (July 11), Australia’s Woodside Energy Group announced it signed a 10-year sale and purchase agreement to deliver liquified natural gas (LNG) to Taiwan’s CPC Corporation.
Starting this month, Woodside will deliver 6 million ton of LNG to Taiwan over the next ten years. The deal also includes the option to extend the agreement and increase the delivery amount to 8.4 tons of LNG over the following decade from 2034 to 2043, according to the press release.
Woodside will source the LNG from multiple locations across its global portfolio. The company maintains significant exploration and development operations in North America, Asia, and Africa.
Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill welcomed the agreement with the CPC corporation, Taiwan’s sole importer of LNG. O’Neill said the decade-long agreement is a first for Woodside and demonstrates the increasing demand for LNG in Asian markets, per the press release.
As Taiwan strives to transition entirely to green energy over the coming decade, a stable supply of carbon-neutral LNG is seen as a crucial resource to help meet the country's energy needs throughout the transition phase. Taiwan received its first shipment of carbon-neutral LNG in March 2020 from the Shell Eastern Trading Company based in Singapore.
In 2021, Taiwan began receiving LNG shipments from the U.S. energy company Cheniere. The CPC has an agreement with Cheniere to import 2 million tons of LNG annually until 2045.
