TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taoyuan District Court ruled to detain former Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) incommunicado on Thursday (July 11).
Cheng, who resigned as chair of the Straits Exchange Foundation on Sunday (July 7), is under investigation for corruption during his tenure as Taoyuan mayor from Dec. 2014 to Dec. 2022, per CNA. Prosecutors have yet to release further information on the charges.
Cheng was released on bail of NT$5 million (US$150,000) on Saturday (July 6). However, prosecutors appealed to the Taiwan High Court, which ordered the Taoyuan District Court to hold a second hearing.
Taoyuan District Court on Tuesday (July 9) ruled to increase bail to NT$12 million but the High Court overturned the decision on Wednesday (July 10).
Following a third hearing on Thursday, Taoyuan District Court ordered to detain Cheng without visitation rights. Meanwhile, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said Cheng will be suspended for three years starting Friday (July 12), per CNA.
