TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan President Lai Ching-te traveled to Hsinchu for an event pitched to young members of the Democratic PRogressive Party (DPP) on Saturday (July 13).
The event attracted 80 participants from across Taiwan for the one-day camp, including many who identify with the “Bluebird Movement” and have expressed concern about the abuse of power in the legislature. President Lai, who also serves as DPP party chairman, addressed the audience and enjoyed many of the students' presentations.
During his speech, Lai asked students about their interpretation of democracy. Some responded that it was the ability to accept diverse views and opinions, while others said they thought it was a means for internal debate to create popular consensus, per CNA.
Lai said that democracy can be used to resolve disputes between political parties. For example, Lai said that all of the politicians in the current legislative session, which began on February 1, have been chosen through democratic processes to represent the country at the highest level. Lai said that from this perspective, it is natural for them to work hard for the interests of thier constituents.
Lai used the game of baseball as an example. Whether a batter gets on base safely or is called out, he needs to show sportsmanship and respect the umpire's decision. Likewise, there may be disputes over the legislative process, but after the third reading is passed, all political parties should abide by the spirit of democracy, keep the government stable moving forward.
Regarding national identity, Lai Ching-de pointed out that most people advocate maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, while a few people hope to unify with China, and others advocate declaring independence. Disagreements over national identity are detrimental to Taiwan's overall development.
Lai Ching-te pointed out that Taiwan is a democratic country with the trust and support of the democratic camp in the international community. When facing the threat of totalitarianism, Taiwan can stand with the democratic camp internationally and maintain peace.
At the end of the event, Lai presented each of the student attendees with individual certificates indicating they completed the course. He also took the opportunity to pose for photos with each of the students and thank them for their interest in politics.
