TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is set to produce Nvidia’s latest Blackwell architecture graphics processing units (GPU), according to supply chain sources.
They said tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are set to incorporate Blackwell in their AI servers, per UDN. The capacity has exceeded expectations, prompting Nvidia to increase its order volume from TSMC by about 25%.
Lauded as the “world's most powerful AI chip,” Blackwell features 208 billion transistors and is manufactured using TSMC’s customized 4nm (nanometer) process, per Nvidia. The architecture supports AI training and real-time large language model inference.
As Nvidia expands its order volume for Blackwell GPUs, the shipment volume for server cabinets has also increased. The shipment volume for GB200 NVL72 and GB200 NVL36 server cabinets has risen from 40,000 to 60,000 units, a 50% increase.
Industry estimates suggest the average selling price of a GB200 NVL36 is US$1.8 million (NT$58.6 million), while a GB200 NVL72 is priced as high as US$3 million. GB200 NVL36 contains 36 GB200 Superchips, 18 Grace CPUs, and 36 enhanced B200 GPUs.
Former TSMC Chair Mark Liu (劉德音) had hinted before stepping down in June that demand for AI applications is higher than last year, saying, “This year will be another year of significant growth.”
