TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Moli, a 16-year-old Malayan tapir at Taipei Zoo, gave birth to a male calf on Monday (July 15)
Moli delivered the calf at 5:15 a.m. and began nursing it by 8:10 a.m., per a press release. According to Taipei Zoo Director Chen Yi-Tsung (諶亦聰) the calf is healthy and slightly larger than Moli's previous offspring, Mohuatou (貘花豆).
The calf is the offspring of Moko, a male tapir who died last year.
Zoo officials said the calf remained calm during its initial weight check. Veterinarians also confirmed the calf has no visible abnormalities.
Moli's due date was originally estimated for late June. However, ultrasound scans showed the calf was not positioned correctly for birth.
Zookeepers continued monitoring Moli and observed signs of lactation, prompting closer observation. A subsequent ultrasound examination on July 10 indicated imminent delivery, and the calf arrived five days later.
