TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Legislative Yuan passed resolutions requiring President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to report on national policies and respond to questions from legislators on Tuesday (July 16).
With a Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) majority, the resolutions proposed by their caucuses were passed, per CNA. Details such as speaking time, number of participants, order, and party proportions will be decided through caucus negotiations.
KMT Legislator Hsieh Long-jie (謝龍介) said Lai had promised before the election to report to the legislature, in accordance with the Constitution, per RTI. In response, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Chung Chia-pin (鍾佳濱) argued that while Lai did make such a promise before the election, it was based on the original Law Governing the Legislative Yuan’s Power.
The current expanded amendment conflicts with the Constitution, Chung argued, and suggested that until the Constitutional Court issues a temporary ruling the old law should be followed.
The Legislative Yuan passed amendments to the Law Governing the Legislative Yuan’s Power on May 28. Lai signed the controversial reform bills into law on June 24.
