TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KTVs filled up on Tuesday night (July 23) after work and class was canceled on Wednesday for Typhoon Gaemi.
Managers of karaoke establishments in Taipei and Taichung reported they were close to or at full capacity soon after the cancellations were announced. “Since the typhoon holiday was announced yesterday I've been receiving endless calls,” the manager of a Taichung KTV surnamed Chen (陳) told CBC News.
Chen said that from midnight Wednesday to the early hours of the morning his KTV was up to 90% full. TVBS reported that just after the cancellations were announced at 8 p.m. popular KTV chain Party World was fully booked in Taipei.
Meanwhile, CNA reported that a New Taipei food court was full on Wednesday and supermarkets experienced increased customer numbers as people stocked up on supplies.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) was asked by reporters about the increased numbers of people heading out in the storm to sing on Wednesday. Chiang cautioned people not to ignore government warnings and said while the rain and wind was not particularly strong on Wednesday morning, it is expected to pick up later in the day.
