TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Wenhu Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line in Taipei City stopped operating from 4:15 p.m. Wednesday (July 24) as Typhoon Gaemi approached Taiwan.
The last train for the day left the terminal station at 3:30 p.m., with the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) deciding to end services due to strengthening wind speeds, per CNA.
The Wenhu Line links Neihu District in the capital’s northeast with Wenshan District in its mountainous south. Most of the line runs on an elevated track, making it more susceptible to the impact of typhoons.
Other MRT lines in Taipei City are still operating, though mostly with a reduced 15-minute interval between trains. The services will be adjusted depending on changing weather conditions, the TRTC said.
Typhoon Gaemi caused widespread traffic disruption around the country, especially affecting rail and air travel. The worst of the storm is expected Wednesday night and Thursday (July 25), when Gaemi is likely to cross the north of the country from east to west before heading out into the Taiwan Strait on Thursday morning.
