TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The eye of Typhoon Gaemi moved into the Taiwan Strait early Thursday (July 25), but the south and central mountain areas are still experiencing heavy rain.
Gaemi circled off the east coast Wednesday (July 24) evening before making landfall near Nanao in Yilan County. The eye of the storm crossed over to the west coast to leave land from Taoyuan’s Xinwu District at 4:20 a.m., per CNA.
By 9 a.m., Gaemi was in the center of the Taiwan Strait, 100 km west-northwest of Hsinchu, and moving west-northwest turning northwest at 10 to 14 km/h, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
Even though the typhoon was moving away, extremely heavy rain or torrential rain advisories were in force for large parts of the country, especially the south and mountain areas in Yilan County, Hsinchu County, and Taitung County. Low-lying areas south of Miaoli County could also be subject to heavy showers.
Majia in Pingtung County registered 1,223 millimeters of rain during the 24 hours up to 9:20 a.m. Thursday. Taiwu, also in Pingtung County, recorded 1,127.5 mm, and Maolin, in neighboring Kaohsiung, 1,066.5 mm during the same period, according to the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR).
