TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Winds brought by Typhoon Gaemi produced more power than Taiwan’s nuclear power plants on Thursday (July 25), according to Taiwan Power Company.
Data from the company, also known as Taipower, showed that wind turbines generated 1921.8 megawatts of electricity at around 1.30 p.m., accounting for 7.2% of the nation’s power. Nuclear power accounted for 6% of electricity generated, at 1629.3 megawatts.
Both nuclear and wind were eclipsed by fossil fuel-generated electricity, which accounted for about 78% of all power generated.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued land and sea warnings for Typhoon Gaemi again on Thursday, and issued strong wind advisories for most of Taiwan. The CWA said Yilan and northern Hualien will be particularly affected by strong winds as the typhoon makes landfall.
