Formally known as the Uniform Invoice Lottery, the sweepstake was introduced in 1951 to encourage businesses to issue receipts, which allowed the government to better collect tax revenue.
As the Ministry of Finance’s official Uniform Invoice Lottery song goes: “Receipts are good and great, patriotic and winning, if the boss doesn’t issue them, he may lose face, if customers don’t ask for them, tax may be lost.”
“If everyone asks for receipts, the country will be strong. Everyone loves the Uniform Invoice.”
