TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport saw the number of outbound passengers surge to 4,000 per hour Thursday (July 25) afternoon following the cancellation of hundreds of flights due to Typhoon Gaemi.
During the morning, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) said 204 flights had been canceled, per CNA. The total included 72 inbound commercial flights and 93 outbound passenger flights.
With the typhoon moving away across the Taiwan Strait during the afternoon, traffic resumed. TIAC recorded 4,000 outbound passengers per hour between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., per CNA.
The duty-free stores and restaurants also recorded markedly improved business compared to Wednesday (July 24) and Thursday morning. Express trains on the Airport Mass Rapid Transit Line resumed service at 3 p.m., helping travelers reach the airport.
Of the 568 flights scheduled for Thursday, 461 or 80% of all flights for the day were scheduled after 1 p.m. Customs and immigration had mobilized extra personnel to handle the surging numbers of passengers, according to TIAC.
