TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — More than 92% of the 783,598 households that lost power during Typhoon Gaemi had electricity restored by Thursday (July 25) evening.
Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) mobilized over 6,000 personnel to restore power but faced challenges from landslides, fallen trees, and widespread flooding, especially in Kaohsiung. As of 8 p.m. Thursday, 60,581 households remain without power, including 15,676 in Kaohsiung, 12,102 in Yunlin, 7,453 in Chiayi, and 6,571 in Changhua, per Taipower.
The severe weather caused by the typhoon, including landslides and flooding, hampered repair efforts. Taipower is working with other agencies to overcome obstacles and restore power safely.
Although the typhoon had passed, its outer bands continued to bring rain and strong winds, causing additional outages. Taipower brought in crews from Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, and Changhua to assist in areas with severe damage, such as Yunlin, Chiayi, and Fengshan.
Flooding in Kaohsiung has damaged underground electrical equipment in many buildings. Taipower dispatched water pumps from southern cities and districts to expedite the removal of water and facilitate repair work.
Landslides in mountainous areas also delayed restoration efforts. In cooperation with highway authorities, Taipower crews have temporarily evacuated these regions and are standing by to commence repairs as soon as roads are cleared.
