TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Typhoon Gaemi hit banana growers hardest, with damage estimated to account for NT$121.01 million (US$3.68 million) out of the total NT$591.74 million of losses for farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture said Friday (July 26).
Local governments and farming sector groups collected data up to 11 a.m. Friday and provided the information to the agriculture ministry. Guava growers suffered NT$38.85 million in damage and papaya farmers NT$32.61 million, per CNA.
Losses for the livestock sector were estimated at NT$22.91 million, with poultry farmers hit hardest. The ministry also calculated damage to private property including greenhouses, stables, fields, and farming equipment at NT$36.77 million.
Even though Typhoon Gaemi crossed Taiwan from Yilan County in the northeast to Taoyuan City in the northwest early Thursday (July 25) morning, Pingtung County in the south was where agriculture suffered the most. The agriculture ministry estimated damage in the area at NT$244.35 million, followed by Yunlin County with NT$76.53 million, and Chiayi County with NT$65.23 million.
