TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – While parts of Taiwan were still struggling with floods and landslides, the total amount of damage to agriculture from Typhoon Gaemi was estimated at NT$1.67 billion (US$50.99 million), the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said Saturday (July 27).
Most of the new information collected before 11 a.m. Saturday reflected the losses for livestock and fish farming sectors, per CNA. Of the NT$234.7 million in damage to livestock, NT$207.33 million was sustained by poultry farmers.
Fish farmers reported losses of NT$236.33 million, while fruit and vegetable growers estimated their losses at NT$1.14 billion. As recorded Friday (July 26), banana farmers were the worst hit, estimating their damage at NT$240.24 million.
Pingtung County was the worst affected region, with losses to its agriculture sector estimated at NT$378.83 million, or 23% of the amount for the whole country. Chiayi County came second with NT$372.54 million, followed by Yunlin County with NT$291.52 million.
