TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Gaemi disrupted air traffic across the Taiwan Strait for days after the storm passed, with many travelers still awaiting flights on Taiwan’s outlying islands of Penghu and Kinmen.
The storm left more than 10,000 people in Penghu waiting to return home following flight cancellations, reported CNA. Likewise, in Kinmen County, over 2,000 people were stranded at the airport after 32 flights were canceled between Wednesday and Friday, reported UDN.
Over the weekend, the Taiwan Air Force supplemented commercial flights to help travelers at Penghu’s Magong Airport return to Taiwan’s main Island. The Air Force dispatched 19 C-130 transport aircraft over two days to help 1,259 people make it home.
On Sunday (July 28), a C-130 transport aircraft helped 70 remaining passengers fly from Magong to Kaohsiung, reported CNA. The remaining 300 travelers in Magong were all able to board commercial flights to return by Sunday afternoon, per CNA.
In Kinmen on Saturday (July 27), the departure hall of Penghu Airport was packed with thousands of travelers hoping to make it home after days of flight delays and cancellations. Although 14 commercial flights were able to transport 1,178 people back to Taiwan, nearly 2,000 people remained stuck at Kinmen Airport overnight.
One unhappy passenger, surnamed Yang (楊), was so upset that he threw a plastic stool at a member of UNI Air’s ground staff before 9 p.m., reported UDN. The airline staff immediately filed a complaint with police who detained the unruly traveler.
The remaining travelers stranded in Kinmen were all able to board flights back to Taiwan’s main island by Sunday afternoon, per reports.
