TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s top badminton men’s duo, Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟), defeated an American duo at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday (July 30).
Lee and Wang, known as the “Lin Yang Pair,” defeated the American-Chinese pair Vinson Chiu (邱愷翔) and Joshua Yuan (約書亞). The 21-12, 21-13 straight-sets victory marked their third consecutive win in the tournament, per CNA.
Despite being placed in the “Group of Death” and facing an extra match, the duo successfully secured a spot in the quarterfinals.
The Taiwanese pair has consistently defeated their opponents, including teams from Japan and Denmark. They will now strive to finish first in their group.
The nickname “Group of Death” originated from Mexican journalists referring to the 1970 World Cup Group 3 as the grupo de la muerte (group of death). The group included England, the reigning champions; Brazil, the eventual winners of the competition; as well as Czechoslovakia and Romania, the runner-ups of the 1962 World Cup, per Sports King. The term has since been applied to other sports to describe highly competitive groups with limited qualifying spots.
