TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Google said Wednesday (July 31) that the economic benefits generated by AI will reach NT$3.2 trillion (US$97.5 billion) by 2030, exceeding 13% of Taiwan's current gross domestic product (GDP).
At a press conference on Wednesday, Google said its products and services generated NT$682.2 billion in value for Taiwanese businesses in 2023, per Public Television Service (PTS). The company also presented its AI white paper, suggesting the government invest in AI infrastructure, develop AI talent, and promote the adoption of AI technology, per CNA.
Google Taiwan Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy Anita Chen (陳幼臻) said she was optimistic about Taiwan’s energy policies over the past few years. She cited the liberalization of the electricity market in 2017 and the relaxation of regulations for corporate green electricity procurement as good progress.
Discussing the challenges Taiwan faces in the AI era, Google Taiwan Managing Director of Sales and Operations Tina Lin (林雅芳) said talent is needed in every field, requiring a blend of cross-disciplinary knowledge and perspectives. Google continues to collaborate with the government to attract more international talent to Taiwan, she said.
When asked by the media about recent U.S. warnings regarding potential disruptions to Pacific undersea cables by China, Lin said the company takes various risks into account in its global undersea cable layout. The company adopts a multi-point construction approach to balance potential risks, she explained.
Lin said over the past five years, Google has collaborated with the Taiwanese academic community and has funded over 40 research projects. By the end of this year, it plans to start eight projects focusing on large language models (LLMs) and machine learning, she added.
