TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Filipino fisher was injured on Wednesday (July 31) after a Taiwanese and a Chinese fishing boat accidentally collided off the Penghu Islands.
The Taiwan Coast Guard issued a press release saying at around 9 a.m. Wednesday the Taiwan-registered Sheng Jung Tsai 36 (勝榮財36) and the Chinese Min Hui Yu 1486 (閩惠漁1486) ran into one another.
One Filipino fisher was injured in the collision, the Coast Guard said. The individual was taken to Penghu’s Magong for treatment of abdominal injuries.
A video released by the Coast Guard showed a fisher being taken to an ambulance who was able to walk on their own.

The Taiwan boat sustained damage to its hull and was taken to Kaohsiung for repairs.
After the Coast Guard arrived and requested to board the Chinese boat for inspection it fled. The Coast Guard said it unsuccessfully used a water cannon to stop the Chinese boat.
The Chinese boat was intercepted by the Chinese coast guard at around 1 p.m., the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard said it notified its Chinese counterparts of the incident and provided evidence of the collision.
The press release said the fisheries department and Mainland Affairs Council will handle any compensation claims the Taiwan boat owners or the injured may have.
