TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Gaemi caused over NT$2.7 billion (US$82.8 million) in agricultural damage to Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Agriculture’s (MOA) latest assessment.
The Cabinet held a meeting on Thursday (Aug. 1) with the MOA, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and other ministries to discuss damages and recovery work following the typhoon, per CNA.
Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation Agency Director General Lee Chen-yang (李鎮洋) said the most affected county was Yunlin, followed by Chiayi and Pingtung. Livestock losses amounted to NT$266 million while fishery losses reached NT$583 million, he said.
Lee added that it takes three to four weeks to replant fruit and leafy vegetables. Currently, 350 tons of refrigerated cabbage and other vegetables have been coordinated for release by farmer groups, he explained.
Regarding Taiwan’s railways, the main areas affected were the North Link Line (Heren to Chongde) and Western Trunk Line (Nanjing to Houbi), per UDN. Restoration costs for the North Link Line are approximately NT$106.4 million and NT$30 million for the Western Trunk Line.
For public facility repair costs, the Public Construction Commission will offer subsidies. Local funding needs are estimated at NT$61.6 billion.
