TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) congratulated Taiwanese athletes Lee Meng-yuan (李孟遠) and Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) for winning medals in skeet shooting and boxing, respectively, at the Paris Olympics.
Lai took to Facebook on Saturday night (Aug. 3), praising Lee for placing third in men’s skeet shooting and winning Taiwan’s first medal at this year’s Olympics. Lee “stood firm under pressure, showcasing his lifelong skills with precise aiming and stable shooting,” Lai said.
This is Taiwan’s first Olympic medal in skeet shooting, he noted.
Lee went against Conner Prince of the U.S. and Tammaro Cassandro of Italy. He had qualified for the Olympics by winning bronze at the 2023 Asian Shooting Championships in South Korea.
In a separate Facebook post on Sunday morning, Lai commended Wu for her “all-out effort” to secure Taiwan's second Olympic medal. Wu earned a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg lightweight division boxing.
“Her determination was evident as soon as she stepped into the ring,” the president said.
Wu lost to Yang Wenlu (楊文璐) of China, who she fought against in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year. This is the 26-year-old’s second appearance at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese boxer Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴) is set to win at least a bronze medal after defeating Navbakhor Khamidova of Uzbekistan in the women's 66-kilogram quarterfinal on Saturday.
