TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A journalist from China grabbed a small Taiwan artwork from a spectator during Sunday’s (Aug. 4) Olympic men’s badminton doubles medal ceremony.
Taiwan’s Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) defeated China’s top-ranked Liang Weikeng (梁偉鏗) and Wang Chang (王昶). The victory brought Taiwan its first gold medal at the Paris Games.
There have been a series of confrontations involving Taiwanese fans at the Olympics over banners and signage. Taipei’s representative in France, Wu Chi-Chung (吳志中), said the incidents have united Taiwan, per CNA.
A friend of the spectator posted about the incident over Threads on Monday (Aug. 5), explaining the situation. The work was allowed into the venue because of its artistic merit, she said.
A Chinese journalist who had been lurking nearby snatched the Taiwan artwork away after the fan held it up. The journalist had been watching the audience, threatening to “block the view” if the Taiwan flag was displayed.
“It’s truly disappointing that the Olympic committee and the host country have allowed Chinese individuals to act so violently and recklessly, even abroad,” the post said.
