TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Approximately 1 million households may soon lose access to HBO, CNN, and 10 other TV channels as negotiations between the company that holds the rights to the channels and Taiwan’s largest cable provider have stalled.
The National Communications Commission (NCC) said on Monday (Aug. 5) that it had accepted an application from cable TV provider Homeplus Digital Co., Ltd. for mediation with rights holder Yongxin Multimedia. The application came after Yongxin said it will cease to provide the channels to Homeplus on Aug. 16 if an agreement cannot be reached, per CNA.
NCC officials said a meeting between the two parties will be arranged as soon as possible, but did not give a specific date. NCC statistics show that just over 1 million households subscribe to the channels that may be affected, accounting for about 22.5% of the total cable TV customers in Taiwan.
In addition to four HBO channels and CNN, Yongxin also holds the rights to Cinemax, sports channels from DAZN, Cartoon Network, and Japanese anime channel Animax. All will be unavailable to Taiwan consumers if an agreement is not reached before Aug. 16.
Homeplus is the largest single provider of cable TV services in Taiwan. A group of 25 independent operators hold the largest portion of the 4.89 million household market overall, at about 23.4%.
