TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The women's table tennis team advanced to the Olympic quarterfinals on Tuesday (Aug. 6).
Taiwan is represented by Chien Tung-chuan (簡彤娟), Chen Szu-yu (陳思羽), and Cheng Yi-ching (鄭怡靜) in women's table tennis. While 31-year-old Chen and 32-year-old Cheng have competed in the Olympics previously, this year is 22-year-old Chien’s first time.
In the doubles match, Chien teamed up with Chen to beat the Australian team 11-4, 11-3, 11-7 in 18 minutes. Although Chien has competed in singles before, this was the pair’s first time playing doubles together.
Cheng, who won bronze in the mixed doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Games, took on South Korean’s Jee Minhyung, winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 in 19 minutes. For the final round, Chen played the third match against Australia’s Melissa Tapper, winning 6-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6 in 37 minutes.
Team Taiwan will move on to the quarterfinals, where they will face off against China, the top-seeded team. Chien said she has not competed against China and hopes it will be a valuable experience.
