TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Japanese police said on Wednesday (Aug. 7) that two Taiwanese men were arrested for allegedly defrauding an 80-year-old woman of NT$1.78 million (US$54,510) worth of gold bars in Tokyo.
A Japanese report picked up by CNA said that two Taiwanese men in their 20s are accused of posing as police officers to defraud an elderly Japanese woman. Citing Tokyo police, the report said that the men phoned the woman telling her she was under suspicion of fraud and that a warrant had been issued for her arrest.
They allegedly told the woman that she could pay a fine for the fake offense in gold bars, which she handed over to an accomplice of the men at her home. Police did not say if the men had admitted guilt.
According to Taiwan’s justice ministry, Taiwan does not have an extradition treaty with Japan. Under Japanese law, foreign citizens found guilty of or charged with crimes may be extradited to their home countries by request under certain conditions.
