TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An elderly woman with dementia who became lost in Hsinchu was found by rescue dog Clay on Saturday (Aug. 3).
Hsinchu Police said on Thursday that the woman was reported missing by family on Saturday and a police and fire department search was mounted, per CNA. Police said two search and rescue dogs named Clay and Henin were given the woman’s scent and sent searching.
Having obtained the scent, police said Clay headed into a wooded area, and they followed him to find the woman in an irrigation ditch. The woman was conscious when she was found and was sent to hospital in a stable condition for treatment, police said.
Search and rescue dogs are an active part of search and rescue teams throughout Taiwan and have also worked assisting in disaster zones overseas. The dogs were praised for rescuing multiple people following the April earthquake in Hualien and working to find survivors after the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes.
