TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) pledged to bolster Taiwan’s defense during a military promotion ceremony on Thursday (Aug. 8).
Lai said that in the era of artificial intelligence, Taiwan must strengthen decentralized command and joint strike capabilities, per the Presidential Office. “This is evident from the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict,” he said.
The president said China's constant political and military coercion against Taiwan has destabilized the regional situation. By simultaneously boosting defense capabilities and arms procurement, Taiwan ensures its armed forces are well-equipped, Lai said.
“Our goal is to build a formidable military force capable of safeguarding the nation's survival and development, and protecting the lives and property of our people,” Lai said. He added that Taiwan will uphold its freedom and democracy and defend its sovereignty.
Lai’s remarks follow the announcement of a 6% increase to Taiwan’s defense budget for 2025 on Wednesday, reaching NT$647 billion (US$19.80 billion).
