TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's "Goddess of Weightlifting" Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) may struggle to repeat her previous Olympic gold medal performance due to injuries.
With only five days remaining until the closing of the Paris Olympics, Kuo will compete in the women's 59kg weight class on Thursday (Aug. 8), per CNA. As the defending gold medalist from the previous Olympics, she faces significant challenges this time.
Kuo, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and broke three Olympic records, faces a difficult title defense because of minor injuries she sustained over the past year. She was still making final adjustments before her departure.
A total of 12 athletes are competing in the women's 59kg weightlifting category at the Paris Olympics. At 30 years old, Kuo is the second oldest among the competitors. Based on the entry scores of all participants, Kuo is ranked fourth.
Over the past six months, Kuo's training has been gradually improving and her back injury has been better managed. Kuo said she hopes her injury will not cause her too much pain so she can compete at her best.
