TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reported that its Kumamoto plant remains in operation following Thursday’s (Aug. 8) earthquake.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Kyushu, Japan on Thursday at 3:43 p.m., per CNA. TSMC said the seismic intensity at their Kumamoto plant did not reach the evacuation threshold and therefore did not impact operations.
The first phase of TSMC’s Kumamoto plant is scheduled to begin mass production in the fourth quarter, utilizing 12nm (nanometer), 16nm, 22nm, and 28nm process technologies. The second plant is expected to start mass production in 2027, using 6nm, 7nm, 12nm, 16nm, and 40nm process technologies.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said Friday (Aug. 9) seismic activity remains high, per NHK. It urged residents living near Nankai Trough, a section of eastern Japan, to remain alert.
