TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Deputy Chair of the National Security Council (NSC) Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆) filed a police report on Friday (Aug. 9) in response to alleged online harassment and slander.
Lin intends to press charges over online posts asserting that he solicited prostitutes and that he is receiving an excessively large salary from the government, reported UDN. The online posts began to gain traction after the Chinese government published a list of “Taiwan independence die-hards” which included Lin, on Wednesday (Aug. 7).
The CCP called for those on the list to be punished, which led Lin to claim the harassment campaign may have been coordinated by Chinese agents.
After the CCP posted the list on the Taiwan Affairs Office website, Lin said he was surprised to read the fake news published about him the following day. A post on the popular Baofei Commune Facebook group alleged Lin had been caught soliciting prostitutes.
Another post from another Facebook group claimed that he was being paid far more than ministers in the Cabinet, despite being only deputy chair at the NSC. The post also alleged the Lai administration had tasked him with managing propaganda operations for the government, per UDN.
In response, Lin said that he refused to tolerate the slander, regardless of whether the posts were made in Taiwan or abroad. He said this was an example of how fast misinformation can spread.
