TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire in Kaohsiung’s Linyuan District on Saturday (Aug. 10) resulted in the death of one person, with a man arrested on suspicion of arson.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to a report in a three-story home, with a small temple on the first level. The fire was extinguished by 11:20 p.m. when firefighters discovered the body of a 47-year-old man surnamed Li (李), who died in the blaze, reported CNA.
According to reports, there were three other people in the home when the fire started. A man and woman were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation, while a third man was able to escape quickly without any injury.
During their investigation, the fire department saw CCTV security footage which showed a man arrive in a car, ignite fireworks, and throw them into the home, reported UDN. The man was soon identified as a 33-year-old surnamed Wu (吳), who was located and arrested just after 3 a.m. in Dongang Township in Pingtung.
The man was reportedly angered because he lent NT$20,000 to a 28-year-old woman surnamed Chen (陳), who failed to pay back the money. Wu decided to set off the fireworks at the home, which is owned by Chen’s mother.
Wu has been transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office and is likely to face charges of arson and murder.
