TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three thousand and ninety-eight households on Xiaoliuqiu off the coast of Pingtung lost power twice on Monday (Aug. 12).
Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) Pingtung office said at 9:28 p.m., an electrical relay issue in northern Xiaoliuqiu caused the two brief outages, per CNA. It affected residents along Sanmin Road, Xiangpu Road, and others.
Following the incident, Taipower initiated emergency power transfer measures and restored power within seven minutes.
A woman surnamed Li (李) said she was bathing her daughter at around 9 p.m. when the power suddenly went out. After finding flashlights, they resumed their shower.
Another resident said they were resting when the two brief outages occurred. They said they were hesitant to turn the air conditioner back on, fearing it might be damaged by subsequent outages.
Taipower said it has six generators on standby to support the power supply in the summer, per UDN. The company added it also started an island-wide project to increase power transmission capacity, with completion expected before peak electricity demand next summer.
