TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Many democratic countries are learning from Taiwan's success in resisting disinformation attacks, former Digital Affairs Minister Audrey Tang (唐鳳) said recently.
Countries are particularly interested in how Taiwan manages to balance its response to extremism while preserving freedom, as Taiwan is one of the few places that has successfully achieved this balance, Tang said, per CNA. She emphasized the importance of establishing diverse and heterogeneous communication networks, providing a variety of options, and implementing a Zero Trust Architecture.
The former minister also stressed the significance of multi-stakeholder participation in creating internet norms and collaborating through forums like the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum and RightsCon.
Regarding methods for countering disinformation, Tang pointed out that pre-bunking is a key strategy. This involves informing the public about impending disinformation attacks, making them less likely to be complicit in spreading fake news, she said.
Over the past seven years, Taiwan has successfully moved away from this outdated term and now separately addresses Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, and domestic misinformation, which has been crucial in preventing internal conflicts.
