TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Navy and Air Force will conduct a live-fire drill on Aug. 20 in Jiupeng, Pingtung County to ensure combat readiness.
Hsiung Feng anti-ship missiles, Patriot air defense missiles, and Sky Bow air defense missiles will be launched as part of the drill, CNA reported. Chien Hsiang drones, developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology will also be deployed. Additionally, Coast Guard vessels equipped with anti-ship missiles will participate alongside Navy ships.
Responding to reports that a classified missile will be fired during the drill, Air Force Command said the procurement of weapons and equipment is planned based on threat assessments and operational needs. The Air Force does not comment on matters related to combat readiness planning or preparedness, it added.
The drill comes as President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has pledged to commit to Taiwan’s defense. By simultaneously boosting defense capabilities and arms procurement, Taiwan ensures its armed forces are well-equipped, Lai said at a military promotion event last week.
“Our goal is to build a formidable military force capable of safeguarding the nation's survival and development, and protecting the lives and property of our people,” he said. Lai recently approved a 6% increase to Taiwan’s defense budget for 2025, reaching NT$647 billion (US$19.80 billion).
