TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) reiterated his commitment to regional peace in response to the US-Japan-South Korea joint statement on continued security cooperation.
Lai said on X that “peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific is our common responsibility and Taiwan remains dedicated to working with global partners to uphold it.” “A shared vision makes us stronger,” he added.
The joint statement emphasized cooperation to address regional challenges and provocations. Lai said he appreciates “the renewed commitment to regional security.”
At the summit held last August, US President Joe Biden said the trilateral partnership is “based on a bedrock of shared values, mutual respect, and a unified commitment to advance the prosperity of our three countries, the region, and the globe.” Bolstering cooperation is “a force multiplier for good,” he said.
Biden and his Japanese and South Korean counterparts discussed expanding cooperation in the region and beyond and shared views on how to address security challenges and increase trade, according to a White House statement.
The trilateral joint statement comes as China ramps up military activities in the Taiwan Strait. Despite the increasing Chinese threat, Lai has said on numerous occasions that Taiwan will work closely with like-minded countries to uphold regional peace and stability.
