TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Minister of Transportation Li Meng-yen (李孟諺) resigned on Monday (Aug. 19) after allegations surfaced about a decade-long extramarital affair.
In a statement released on Monday, Li apologized for the distress his past actions have caused his wife and family, as well as the negative public perception, according to CNA. He expressed his regrets and submitted his resignation to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) in the afternoon.
Li took office as transportation minister on May 20, serving only 92 days, the shortest tenure of any transportation minister since martial law was lifted, according to Public Television Service (PTS). His primary focus was on railways and highway engineering.
Cabinet spokesperson Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) said Cho appreciated Li’s dedication to public service, reported CNA. As transportation minister, Li worked to improve road safety, address the aftermath of the Hualien earthquake on April 3, and manage traffic disaster recovery after Typhoon Gaemi, Chen explained.
Chen added that out of respect for Li’s personal wishes, Cho approved his resignation.
