TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A packaging design has sparked controversy for Taitung’s organic rice, which won gold in the Agriculture and Food Agency’s premium rice competition on Aug. 7.
The award-winning organic fragrant rice is branded with the image of Taitung Jhiben Wetland's Taiwan pheasant. However, its packaging has been criticized by netizens for featuring non-native eastern Taiwan wildlife, per CNA.
The packaging features the Taiwan torrent carp, an introduced species to the area. Additionally, it includes the plumbeous water redstart, a bird typically found near streams rather than wetlands.
Association president Lee Chien-tung (李建通) acknowledged the oversight Tuesday (Aug. 20). Lee promised future packaging will accurately represent local flora and fauna.
