TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a global consensus, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) said on Wednesday (Aug. 21).
The US Democratic Party released its party platform on Monday (Aug. 19), and mentioned the “Six Assurances” to Taiwan for the first time. The fact that the Democratic Party has incorporated it into party policy shows that the stability of the Taiwan Strait has become an international consensus, Chuang said, per CNA.
Chuang said he is pleased that both major US political parties are committed to peace in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the strait. He added this support would help boost Taiwan's international standing and regional security. “We welcome this development," he said.
The Democratic Party reaffirmed the “one China” policy and opposed unilateral changes to the regional status quo. It pledged “to invest in our alliances and partnerships” to deter Chinese coercion of regional neighbors or to undermine international rule of law.
Taiwan has sent a legislative delegation to observe the US Democratic National Convention (Aug. 19-22) in Chicago. The lawmakers will engage with Democrat politicians and government officials to enhance Taiwan-US relations.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it will continue to work closely with friends from both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as other sectors, to deepen Taiwan-US ties based on shared values. Last month, an 11-member delegation was sent to observe the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee.
