TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The military will hold live-fire missile tests in Pingtung County next week, reports said Wednesday (Aug. 21).
The Aug. 26-27 tests will feature TOW 2A anti-tank missiles launched by a TOW 2B launcher mounted on a M1167 Humvee armored vehicle, per CNA. Taiwan ordered 1,700 TOW 2B missiles and 100 launchers from the United States, with delivery expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Because the TOW 2B launchers are equipped with thermal imaging capabilities, next week’s launches will take place at night. The new system gives the operator extra seconds to correct the course of the missile, raising the likelihood of hitting the target, the report said.
The 2B version has a range of more than 4,500 meters, compared to the 3,750 m for the TOW 2A. Both systems can be installed on helicopters as well as on ground vehicles.
The Ministry of National Defense budgeted NT$11.81 billion (US$369.82 million) for the TOW 2B project from 2018 to 2025. The deal includes 1,240 missiles, 24 Humvees, and 30 target acquisition systems.
