TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Prosecutors searched the office of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Lin I-chin (林宜瑾) at the legislature on Wednesday morning (Aug. 21).
A box of evidence was removed from the office during the search. Prosecutors told CNA they could not yet disclose the reason for their investigation after the search was completed just before 11 a.m.
Lin posted a message on Facebook at around 11.30 a.m. and said she would cooperate with the investigation. She added she would do so regardless of whether the investigation was launched because of a misunderstanding, or because of a leak from a person with ulterior motives.

DPP Spokesperson Wu Cheng (吳崢) told reporters after the search that the party supports investigations when there are suspicions of criminal action. He said that eradicating corruption, fighting gangs, and cracking down on fraud are the government’s priorities, per CNA.
Media reports have speculated that the search was the result of infighting amongst a Tainan clique of DPP legislators. Wu declined to comment on this when asked, and said that observers should refrain from speculating on prosecutors’ motive for the search.
Lin is reportedly a member of the DPP’s New Tide Faction, of which Lai Ching-te (賴清德) was a member before he was elected president. The DPP voted to formally dissolve all factions in 2006, though they reportedly continue to operate.
