TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Filipino delegation visited I-Mei Foods Company’s Nankan plant in Taoyuan City on Wednesday (Aug. 21) to check on the wellbeing of the plant’s Filipino workers.
Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Board of Directors Member Rose Marie Arenas led the delegation, which included MECO Administrative Services Director Irene Tan and Chief of Staff Marilen So.
After a vocal performance by the plant’s Filipino workers, Arenas revealed that she would donate US$1,000 (NT$31,000) to be divided among the workers as a Christmas bonus.
“Today, you showed you are heroes,” Arenas said. “I will make a declaration to Congress to do something more for Filipino workers in Taiwan.”
Arenas inspected I-Mei’s food products, including its pineapple cakes and plant oils. She spoke highly of I-Mei’s product quality.
Marilen So commented that Arenas has great faith in I-Mei. This was based on a visit she made to I-Mei eight years before when she was deputy speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines.
I-Mei has hired nearly 10,000 workers from the Philippines since 1993. Approximately 53 have been promoted to higher-ranking jobs and they have become an integral part of the company’s workforce and success.
