TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Memorandums of understanding (MOU) set to be signed at the 2024 Taipei-Shanghai City Forum have been reviewed by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) and do not break any laws or regulations, MAC Deputy Chair Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) said on Thursday (Aug. 22).
Speaking at a press conference in Taipei, Liang said that two MOUs focusing on smart medical care and wildlife will be signed during the forum, per CNA. Liang said any agreements that local governments want to sign with parties on the other side of the Taiwan Strait are required to undergo a review by MAC to ensure they are in line with cross-strait regulations.
Taipei City Government has not yet proposed a timeframe or a list of attendees for the forum, Liang said. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) has said he hopes the forum will be able to reduce cross-strait tensions, though Liang declined to comment on this.
The Shanghai branch of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office sent a delegation to Taipei to prepare for the forum in June. The forum is expected to be held sometime after Chiang returns from a visit to the US in early September.
The 2023 edition of the forum was held in Shanghai, where Chiang met his counterpart Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng (龔正).
