TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Black Hawk helicopter picked up injured hikers from the United Kingdom and Taiwan in the mountains of Hualien County early Saturday (Aug. 24) morning.
A group of four had been moving up to the Qilai East Ridge in Taroko National Park Friday (Aug. 23) when two members fell and injured their knees, making them unable to continue the journey, per CNA. As the mountain track to reach them was unstable, the Hualien County Fire Department decided to wait until light Saturday morning before sending a four-member rescue team to the area.
At 5 a.m., the hikers reported back about local weather conditions and sent a picture of the injuries to show the two were unable to walk. The National Airborne Service Corps (NASC) mobilized a Black Hawk helicopter to pick up the injured, and landed at Dexing baseball grounds from where the two hikers were transferred to a hospital.
The Taiwanese hiker, named Chen (陳), 24, and the British hiker, 27, had been conscious throughout their ordeal, according to the Fire Department.
