TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Street signs with calligraphy-style fonts in Taitung will be removed after complaints from the public who said they may cause traffic accidents.
Taitung’s Chishang Township Office said on Tuesday (Aug. 27) that a review found the signs were not compliant with national regulations and would be removed, per CNA. Chishang Mayor Lin Chia-hung (林建宏) said a budget of NT$298,000 (US$9,330) has been prepared to replace the signs.
The office took design submissions from local artists after a typhoon destroyed many of its road signs in 2016. However, the signs’ inconsistency with other road markings has generated concern, the township office said.
According to the transport ministry’s regulations, Chinese characters used on street signs must be written in a nationally regulated square script (國字方體).
