TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) pledged to continue promoting peace and sustainable global development on Wednesday (Aug. 28).
During a meeting with Rotary International President Mario de Camargo, Lai called Taiwan a force for good in the world and a trusted partner for global peace and prosperity, according to the Presidential Office. He said the number of NGOs in Taiwan has grown in recent years, with over 100,000 organizations established. He admired the organization’s work across Taiwan, helping the disadvantaged.
Lai also appreciated their assistance during the pandemic and disasters in other countries, as well as their promotion of international exchanges that have helped showcase Taiwan to the world.
Lai said that more than 30,000 people from over 150 countries are expected to visit Taiwan in June 2026, when it will host the Rotary International Convention. The president reiterated that the nation shares the organization’s goal of enhancing international understanding and goodwill.
Reflecting on his first 100 days in office, Lai shared his deep appreciation for the dedication of Taiwanese from all walks of life. He described Taiwan as a country that always strives to improve and face the future with optimism.
Rotary International was established in 1905 in Chicago. Over nearly 120 years, it has grown to 1.4 million members. According to its website, the organization aims to “provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace …”
